De Pere repeals sex offender ordinance

posted Feb 7, 2013, 9:21 AM by Lara K

The De Pere City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday night to repeal an ordinance that had restricted where sex offenders may live in the city.

After the vote, the council decided that an advisory board would determine the proper level of public notification of where sex offenders are living, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The ordinance had prohibited offenders from living within 500 feet of places where children congregate.

And alderman had requested repeal of the ordinance after a state Department of Corrections official said such ordinances compromise what agents can do, making it more difficult for corrections agents to track offenders.
